In the German poetry, there are numerous poets who have been under the influence of Persian literature. Among these poets, Goethe’s name has been almost interwoven with Hafez, the great Iranian poet. Friedrich Rukert, August von plan, and Gottfried Herder have composed great poems in German under the influence of Persian literature. Heinrich Heine is another German poet who has been greatly fascinated by the Persian literature and inspired in many cases directly or indirectly by Persian literature. For instance, he has directly used the life story of Ferdowsi, the great Iranian epic composer, as a theme in one of his long poems to ironically illustrate his own personal situations and those of other poets and artists living in the German society. In other poems composed by Heine; imageries, metaphors, and some other themes have been used partly under the influence of the Persian language and literature.
