The Symbol of "Dog" in the Mystical LiteratureMahnaz BazgirAssistant Professor, Islamic Azad University, Tehran Branch, IranAbstractThis paper aimed to study the image of dog and attitudes towards thiscreature by reviewing the mystic literature of the fourth century AH untilthe present time. Also the changes of such an image presented by thewriters and poets of different centuries were investigated. In so doing,documented evidences were introduced, and the effective factors includingallegory, simile, and unity of being, as well as the characteristics of mysticlanguage and love were defined comprehensively. Moreover, social,political, and mystic learning were scrutinized and an aspect of Islamic-Iranian mysticism was introduced. The similes exaggerations wereexplained since in the mystical texts, words are considered as means toreach the meaning. The mystics use the simile language to explain theirthoughts. God and creatures are full of love, and the language of mysticshas a high place due to its interaction with love. This language cannot beincluded in the common language since it is different from commonpeoples’ language. Thereafter, the emergence of dog-based mystic literaturewas researched by studying the works of the Iranian mystics and therepresentations of their ideas, life, and words in their works. Finally,samples of the works of various writers and poets were presented to supportthis research with documents.Keywords: dog, simile, unity of being, language of mysticis
